For the last month I’ve been using this Bulletproof Coffee recipe every morning for breakfast.

According to the book Fast This Way by Dave Asprey (see my book recommendations), this recipe is actually something that you can use in partnership with a fast. So even on days where I’m intermittent fasting I’ll make this a part of my morning routine.

Potential benefits of the Bulletproof Coffee

The healthy fats and MCT oil have a few benefits. Some of the claims include:

  • maintaining energy levels throughout the morning
  • preventing hunger
  • improving mental focus

I would say that in my personal experience I have actually felt all three of these. When I’m intermittent fasting and pairing that with a Bulletproof Coffee I typically feel more focused and more energy, and at the same time I don’t feel hungry.

Part of that is that you are consuming a lot of calories! This isn’t no lightweight coffee.

I think the best thing to do is to try this for yourself and see how you feel. As you start, I’d also recommend starting with a smaller amount of both button and MCT oil and work your way up. I’ve been getting the Brain Octane Oil from Bulletproof. And it’s important to use grass-fed organic butter, and high quality coffee.

Bulletproof Coffee

Equipment

  • Blender or Nutribullet

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Freshly brewed coffee
  • 1 to 3 tsp tbsp of a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil I would slowly introduce MCTs. Start with 1 Tsp and work your way up to as much as you'd like. I still use only 2 tsp to 1 tbsp.
  • 1 tbls grass-fed organic unsalted butter

Instructions
 

  • Brew 1 cup of coffee using freshly ground beans. I use a pour over.
  • Add tbsp of a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. When first using this recipe, I'd recommend starting with only 1 tsp and then working your way up to whatever you like.
  • Add 1 to 2 tbsp of grass-fed, organic, unsalted butter.
  • Mix in a blender for 20 to 30 seconds.

A few years ago I tried doing this recipe without the blending and it was a mistake! I highly recommend blending this up, it’ll be much tastier and easier to consume. I have found that slowly ramping up MCT oil intake is best because taking in so much oil at one time was upsetting my stomach at first.
