Good morning! It’s great to see you here, let’s dive right in.

Gut health starter kit

Did you know that your body contains 360 times more protein-coding genes from your microbiome (8 million) compared to your own human genome which contains only 22,000 unique genes. This might be one of the reasons it’s important to keep those suckers happy.

Both inside and out, our bodies harbour a huge array of micro-organisms. While bacteria are the biggest players, we also host single-celled organisms known as archaea, as well as fungi, viruses and other microbes – including viruses that attack bacteria. Together these are dubbed the human microbiota. Your body’s microbiome is all the genes your microbiota contains, however colloquially the two terms are often used interchangeably.

The human microbiome

The microbiome will show up regularly in this newsletter because there are many studies linking your gut health to things like diabetes, anxiety, obesity, asthma, and more. As a start, here are two quick tips to keep your gut inhabitants happy:

  • Keep a wide range of whole foods in you diet. Try to rotate the fruits and vegetables you’re getting each week and even throughout the day, this will help you develop a more diverse microbiome

  • Avoid pesticides. Try to buy organic whenever possible. The pesticides not only reduce the microbiome of whatever you’re eating, but can harm your own.

Looking forward to sharing more tips on this as I learn more.

Can’t give up my Nerd Clusters

Nerds Clusters just won “best in show” at the Sweet & Snacks expo. That’s good news because I do happen to love these little guys, but unfortunately they’re on my naughty list.

Although you might want to limit even natural sugar intake, if you’re looking for something to satisfy a sweet tooth, here are some ideas / things I’m trying:
